Simultaneous Contrasts was painted by Sonia Delaunay-Terk in 1913. It is one of a group of works of the same title in which the artist moved away from Cubist and Futurist deconstruction of form in order to create a synthesis of the mesh of “windows” and the rhythm of “circular forms” developed by her husband Robert. In these works Sonia Delaunay-Terk reached an abstract purity in which colour is both form and content. Members of the Museum’s Volunteers Group will explain these ideas and other details of the painting in talks given in front of the work throughout the month of May. Thursdays at 12 noon and 5pm, and Sundays at 5pm.
