Walking through Flowers

From 28 September to 14 November 2010

Enrolment from 14 September

Late September sees the start of a new course in the “Art Routes. Tours around the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection” programme. As always, it is only offered to Friends and on this occasion the subject is the depiction of flowers in the paintings housed in the Museum, from the Italian and Flemish Primitives up to Pop Art. This stroll among flowers will introduce participants to some of the most important still lifes and flower paintings in the Collection and will also reveal the often largely concealed presence of flowers in other types of paintings and their meanings, seen from the dual viewpoint of art history and botany. The eternal relationship between flowers and beauty, the varied symbolism often associated with their depiction in art – fidelity, innocence, fragility, nobility, power, life, death – and the complex relations between art and the natural world will be some of the key themes in this new Art Route.
