International Museums Day – 18 May

Free entry, 10am to 7pm

Taking place next Friday, 18 May, is International Museums Day. Its theme this year is Museums in a changing World. New challenges, new inspirations. How do museums reflect changes in the world around us? What is changing within museums? What are their challenges for the future? How will these changes affect people and society? These are some of the questions on which this year’s event will invite us to reflect, and we would like to share them with our visitors so that they once again feel fully involved, interactive participants in the Museum. For this reason, and in addition to the traditional free entry to the Permanent Collection and Temporary Exhibitions on that day, visitors will have the opportunity to pass on to us their ideas and expectations with regard to changes in society and to the role that museums can play. The Museum’s Main Hall will have a board with concepts and ideas relating to change, to which visitors can contribute. Your ideas and participation will be photographed over the course of the day and subsequently published on flickr.
In addition, and with the same end in mind, the Museum’s Education Department has once again organised a range a activities and has also invited participants from its various programmes (Special Needs public, University for Older Students, Young Thyssen, Teacher Training, Schools and Volunteers) to act as spokespeople in this proposed dialogue with the public. This is a way of making visible the educational and social activities that the Museum undertakes throughout the year, in addition to representing an outstanding opportunity to enjoy art and to reflect on the future of museums and their educational mission.

Museums Night – 19 May

Free entry to the temporary exhibitions, 7pm to 1am.

On the day after Museums Day, 19 May, the Museum will also be participating in the annual celebration of Museums Night, with free entry to the temporary exhibitions Chagall and Into India from 7pm until 1am.
