Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid
The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and Fundación El Greco 2014 are organising an international symposium on Domenikos Theotokopoulos, El Greco, to mark the 400th anniversary of his death this year. Directed by Fernando Marías, Senior Professor of Art History at the Universidad Autónoma, Madrid, and a member of the Real Academia de Historia, this is the second symposium of this type on the artist to be organised in Spain, following the one held in Toledo in 1982. El Greco’s early years in Crete and Italy, his arrival in Toledo and the importance of architecture in his work are some of the issues that will be discussed by curators, researchers, academics and experts from institutions world-wide over the four days of the symposium, with the aim of analysing the artist’s life and work in detail.
Enrolment opens for students on 31 March and for the general public on 8 April.
