When describing his method of perspective in his treatise De Pictura, Leon Battista Alberti compared a painting with an aperta finestra, an open window. Extending this Albertian metaphor beyond the strictly optical, the new on-line periodical of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collections aims to open a window onto a different world through each work of art.
The mission of the Museum’s curators is not simply that of preserving the works in a material sense and presenting them. Rather, it particularly focuses on intellectual curatorship in the sense of a systematic and continually updated study of each work. This activity culminates in a reinterpretation of the work’s meaning in the light of new discoveries.
The articles to be published in Open Window, which will appear three times a year, are the result of the research undertaken by the Museum’s curatorial team. Their publication will allow us to share new data and fresh viewpoints with the academic community and with the interested public, with the aim of offering a constantly updated and more intense experience of our collections.
