Use an asterisk * or a percentage % when you know the word but do not know if it goes with another word or group of characters.

Use a question mark (?) to substitute any character which you do not know.

For example: for Paul Gauguin's works, type *gaug* in Artist and for works of the 17th century, type 16?? in Execution date.
