Bourdon is a painter who went through very marked different stages. Of an adventurous spirit, he travelled at a very young age to Rome, where he followed the fashion of genre scenes of Naturalism. On returning to Paris, he came under the influence of Poussin and his work became Classicist. Finally, he was called by Queen Cristina of Sweden to be appointed First Painter. On his return to Paris, where he met Poussin again, he achieved great prestige as a painter of mythological, religious and historical themes, as well as a portrait painter.
