Much influenced by Van Eyck and, above all by Van der Weyden and Petrus Christus, Bouts lived for practically all his life in Louvain, where he led a well-to-do existence. His style is outstanding for the study of landscapes, interpreted with a masterly range of colour and a command of atmospheric effect through light.
