Annenkov is an example of the evolution of the Russian avant-garde movements; first he studied art in St. Petersburg, travelling in 1911-1912 to Paris to gain a firsthand knowledge of what was happening in the world of art. On returning to Russia he joined the avant-garde of his country and after the Revolution took an active part in the new artistic languages from theatrical sets, the design of books and pictorial experimentation . In 1929 he decided to emigrate to Paris, where he died in 1974.
