Considered to be the painter of colonial America, Copley painted protraits and pictures with historical subject matter. His portraits of the society of Boston reflect the influence of the British painter Blackburn, above all in the Rococo use of light and colour. His talent for drawing gives his paintings a touch of elegance. He also included in his portraits article of everyday life related to the subject, which was unheard of in the American painting of the XVIIIthe century. Encouraged by Sir Joshua Reynolds and the also painter Benjamin West he travelled to London where he remained almost all his life. It was there that he painted his most important works.
