Although Dutch in origin, he lived in Lyon whence he took his name. In 1551 he was appointed official painter to Henry II and later to Charles II. His style shows a knowledge of Flemish painting, probably through Van Cleve, with whom he very likely coincided at the French Court. The only painting signed and dated by him that we still have is the portrait of Pierre Agmeric, now in the Louvre, all the other works that are known of his being attributed.
