Trained with Ercole de'Roberti, he was also influenced by Tura and Cossa. He worked in Bologne, where he allowed himself to be led by the more amiable trend of Florentine art. He later settled in Mantua, where he was in the service of the Estes, becoming the successor to Mantegna.
