The son of Lucas Cranach, he trained in his father's studio, becoming so identified with him that it has been difficult for specialists to distinguish his works from those of his father, of whom he can be considered in many ways a continuator. He travelled to Italy, where he made various sketches still in existence today, dying in the city of Bologna.
