After initial training in Holland, he moved to Brugges, where he would stay until his death. There he belonged to the guild of painters and even became its senoir member. He was influenced by Van Eyck, and his style can be considered within the Primitives of the school of Brugges, although in his painting one can already see certain elements of the new Renaissance tendency that was arriving from Italy. This gave a personal character to his work of soft modelling and special light effects.
