Born in Philadelphia, the son of the artistic director of Philadelphia Press and of a sculptress. He studied in New York and there carried out his first illustrations for covers and caricatures for Harper's Weekly. He came across the new trends of the avante-garde movements in New York, at the "Armory Show" in 1913, feeling attracted mainly by Matisse, Gauguin and Van Gogh. His painting is characterized by the search for new methods of expression, as can be seen in his closeness to Cubist language in some of his works. As for the subject matter, we can also see an attempt to reflect the rapid development of the American industrial society, as some of his works suggest, linked to the language of Pop Art.
