An eclectic painter in whom complex influences converge; the disciple of Ludovico Cigoli, he fell under the influence of Caravaggio, because of the realism and the directed light that can be seen in his painting. In turn, his work shows the mark of Rubens and the Venetian masters of the XVIth century, especially of the Bassanos. Supported by Cardinal Ferdinando de Gonzaga, he became painter to the Court of Mantua, for whose cathedral he carried out important frescos. Afterwards he left for Venice, where he stayed until his death.
