Born in Pisa, to a family of Tuscan extraction, he was initially trained at Aurelio Lomi's studio, but when very young he left for Rome and came into contact with Caravaggio, being one of the first to assimilate his influence. However, the Naturalism of Gentileschi was always toned down, without lapsing into the excesses of the Caravaggists. Progressively his style mellowed, with more idealized notes and with subtle shimmer of light on the figures and fabrics. A much travelled artist, he lived in Las Marcas, Genoa and Turin, working also in Paris and, finally, in London, where he lived for ten years until his death.
