Nicknamed "Mabuse" because of his place of birth, Jan Gossaert is an essential figure to understand the introduction of the Renaissance into the Netherlands. In his work there converge the precision and the irreproachable technique of Flemish painting with the innovations of the monumentality and the subject matter of Italian art. He travelled to Rome in the retinue of Philip of Borgogne and there he was able to assimilate the teachings of the painting being developed at the Papal court.
