Born in Ferrara and brought up in Bologne, he was given the nick-name Guercino because he was cross-eyed. A master of his own expressive media, in Guercino the vibrant colour of the Venetians converges with the Classicist training acquired in Bologna from his master Ludovico Carracci. His drawing is perfect, but invisible which determines the composition but without destroying the freedom of the brush and imagination. In 1612 he arrived in Rome, painting there some of his most famous works such as the frescoes with Night and Dawn for the Ludovisi Casino that won him great fame. Later he settled in Bologna, where he stayed until his death, evolving towards a painting of Classicist forms, balanced and in delicate colours.
