Born in Aubsburg, Baviera, Hans Holbein the Elder, like his brother Sigmund, was a painter of religious works marked by the rich colouring of late Gothic. He was also a painter of stained glass windows and painted several portraits, establishing the basis of the training in this genre for his famous son Hans Holbein, the Younger. His style can be established in the transition from late Gothic to the beginnings of the *Renaissance in the Northern countries*.
