Born in Karlsruhe, at whose School of Fine Arts he trained, he moved to Berlin entering into contact with other painters of the time, especially with Grosz, joining the movement of *New Objectivity*. He was a teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe until the Nazis forbade him to exhibit and teach, being obliged to eke out a living painting porcelain. After the war he returned he returned to his former occupation in his home town.
