Born in Torsok, to an aristocratic family, Alexei von Jawlens initially pursued a military career, reaching the rank of lieutenant. At the age of 25 he decided to begin his training as a painter, which would lead him to abandon the army and go to Munich, where he met Kandinsky. He travelled to Paris to work with Matisse. On his return to Germany he formed with Kandinsky and other painters the New Association of Artists. After the war, which he spent in Switzerland and Italy, he formed with Klee, Kandinsky and Feininger the group of the Blue Four. The Nazis prohibited his work.
