The son of an army doctor, he trained at the School of Art in Moscow, where he met Natalia Gontcharova, who would be his lifelong sentimental and artistic companion. His first period was defined by Neoprimitivism, seeking the Russian roots and the influence of *Fauvism* and German Expressionism. Becoming one of the most outstanding figures of the Russian avant-garde, he was linked to many of the initiatives and groups of this period. In 1914 he went to Paris, collaborating with Diaghilev. He was called up during the war and discharged on being wounded. He returned to Paris, where he lived until the end of his life.
