Born in Bristol, the son of the owner of a modest guesthouse, at the age of six he already began to draw the lodgers and sell them the portraits. When the guesthouse went bankrupt, the family moved to Bath, and Lawrence contributed with his portraits to their upkeep. he received practically no academic training in his early years and in spite of this he managed to achieve great recognition in his time. Only later on, and on the advice of Sir Josuha Reynolds, did he enter the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his first oil-painting in 1788. From then onwards, he was firmly established as a painter, receiving important commissions. In 1792 he became Royal Painter, a member of the Academy in 1794 and in 1815 he was given a knighthood. Finally, in 1820 he was elected president of the Royal Academy.
