Born in Utrecht, his beginnings as a painter were marked by Naturalism in the landscape genre, evolving towards a greater formal simplification. In 1916 he came across Mondrian and met Husar and Van Doesburg, with whom he formed the group of "De Stijl". From that moment onwards, and although he left the group in 1918, his language is linked to *Neoplatonism*. His last period is defined by a return to figuration.
