An outstanding figure of the painting scene of the Netherlands during the XVIth century, he was born in Leyden and was brought up by his father, also a painter, Hugo Jacobsz. Although there is no documental proof, he is supposed to have travelled to Italy, because of the incorporation of Renaissance elements to his works, and to France, because of certain similarities with the school of Fontainebleau revealed by his themes. He was also an outstanding engraver.
