Born in Munich, the son of a landscape painter, he began to study Philology at the University in his home town. After his military service he decided to dedicate himself completely to painting. Two journeys to Paris marked his initial stages, the first to discover Impressionism, the second, to study with passion the work of Van Gogh. Specialized in the study of the anatomy of animals, he had to give classes to keep body and soul together. His meeting Kandinsky and Macke would mark his evolution, and they created together the group that edited the almanac of the Der Blaue Reiter and the organization of the first two exhibitions. He died on the front in the war in 1916.
