Born to a family of millers, probably in the town of Haarlem, where he also died. In Mostaert there is an unusual convergence of the northern traditions characteristic of his circle, with the introduction of certain elements from Italy, whose style he may have come across in Brussels and in Malinas when he was in the service of Margaret of Austria, who had an important collection of paintings.
