Born in Liebau and trained at the Academies of Dresden and Munich, Otto Mueller was the last of the painters to join the group of Expressionists *Die Brücke*. With Heckel and Kirchner he painted the Baltic coasts and the areas round Prague, with a subject matter reduced practically to the landscape and female nudes placed in nature. Of all the members of *Die Brücke* he was the least incisive with a natural tendency to the refined and the poetic, softening the characteristic angulosity of the group.
