A Brussels court painter, he was the disciple of his father, Valentine van Orley., and met Dürer in person when the latter travelled to the Netherlands. He is one of the best representatives of the introduction of the Renaissance in Flemish painting, with a harmonious and exquisite sense of composition. Although he did not travel to Italy, he was familiar with the work of Raphael through the cartoons for tapestries of the master of Urbino for the Vatican, which were woven in Flanders.
