The disciple and friend of William M. Harnett, he formed part of the group of North American painters who cultivated the technique of trompe-l'oeil in the still-life, characterized by an almost photographic realism. He spent his youth in Philadelphia, where he studied with Harnett, his work being much influenced by him. He never managed to achieve the fame of his friend and disappeared into oblivion after his death. Today he has been recuperated by historiography as an important painter of still-lifes, comparable in quality to those of Harnett.
