Liubov Popova
Ivanovskoie, 1889-Moscow, 1924
Popova, the "artist-constructor" as she was known by her contemporaries, was one of the principal defendants of abstract art in Russia and one of the most outstanding figures of the Russian avant-garde in the first years of the twentieth century. She took part in one of the most innovative periods of Russian art which spanned the years from 1914, the start of World War I, to the years immediately after the 1917 Revolution.
Popova studied with the Impressionist painter Stalislav Shukovski and at the school of Konstantin Yuon and Ivan Dudin. Between 1909 and 1916 she travelled in Italy, France and Samarkand. In Paris she studied with Jean Metzinger and Henri Le Fauconnier and at the La Palette studio. In 1913 Popova was in Tatlin's studio in Moscow. During her trip to Italy in 1914 she encountered Futurism and her work reflects its influence, together with certain aspects derived from Cubism. In 1915 she took part in The Last Futurist Painting Exhibition: 0-10 in Petrograd, together with Malevich, Tatlin and others.
In 1916, under the influence of Malevich's Suprematism, she began a series of non-objective paintings entitled "Pictorial Architectures", in which she began to explore the possibilities of abstract pictorial language.
After the Revolution she was involved in political activities and worked as a professor of art in various institutions. In 1918 she joined the Federation of the Left of the artists' union in Moscow and in 1920 she became a member of the State Institute for Artistic Culture which was based in Moscow.
In 1922 Popova officially abandoned painting in order to dedicate herself to designing textiles and to making prints and designing theatrical scenery. Her early death cut short her intense and creative artistic career.
