Nicknamed "Marinus", he was born in Reymerswaele, the exact date of his birth and death being unknown, as well as the information about his training. He was one of the main creators of genre scenes, this style deriving from that of Quintin Massys but exaggerating its tormented and caricature-like forms. Dürer's influence can also be seen in his work, but the expressionist and archaic tone is dominant, in accordance with the Flemish tendencies of the beginning of the XVIth century.
