He as born in Schorl, but we do not have exact details of his early training. A painter with a hectic life, his style received influences according to his successive journeys. In 1519 he travelled to Germany and met Dürer in person. The following year he went to Venice, assimilating the lessons of Giorgione and Palma the Elder. He continued his journey as a pilgrim to Jerusalem and on his return he settled in Rome, protected by Adrian III, the Pope of Utrecht, who appointed him inspector of the Belvedere collections. In the city of the Tiber he was able to admire the works of Raphael and Michelangelo, which had a profound influence on him. On the death of the Pope he returned to Utrecht, where he liveed until his death, not without first travelling to France.
