The son of an importante lawyer, he was born in Miesbach and studied painting and wood engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1915 he took refuge in Zurich, working as an illustrator for the magazine Sirius of Walter Serner. There he met the members of the Dadist circle, and joined the group. On his return to Zurich, he inveted "Schadography", a combination of the technique of collage with the direct printing of the silhouette of objects on paper exposed to light before being fixed as a photograph. His Dadaist experience was cut short abruptly when he travelled to Italy and saw at first hand the works of the great masters of the Renaissance, whose influence he adopted, translating it to the language of modernity. His style developed towards the Realism of an Expressionist style, and he participated in the exhibition of New Objectivity.
