A famous master from Munich, Beham was born in Nüremberg, where he was probably trained in the vicinity of Dürer. Besides being a renowned engraver, he worked for the family of the Dukes of Baviera, for whom he carried out numerous commissions of religious paintings and portraits. If his style came from Dürer little by little he incorporated Mannerist elements from Italy and the Netherlands.
