Born in Ferrara, his training is unknown, but his style shows the influence of Mantegna, Piero della Francesca and Flemish painting. It is considered to be the first of the Ferrara painters and creator of its XVth century school. He worked mainly for the court of the Estes, but the lack of change in his style caused him to be substituted by Ercole de'Roberti, and he died in poverty.
