Born in Pratovecchio, near Florence, his training was carried out in the workshop of the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti, which he entered at the age of ten. In 1424 he joined the guild of St. Luke, working the following year on the mosaics of San Marcos in Venice and, years later, on the frescos of San Martino in Bologne. His most representative work was executed in grisaille on a wall of the cathedral of Florence, representing a monument to the condottieri Giovanni Acuto. Years later he painted his famous scenes of the battle of San Romano. He also worked in Padua and in Urbino, dying in Florence.
