Born in Coulommiers, he went to Rome at a very young age, in which city he lived and developed his artistic career until his death. He was the disciple of Vouet but he received the fundamental influence from the Naturalism of Caravaggio. Dedicated to religious subject matter and the portrait, he was especially fond of genre scenes.
