Born in Venice, to a family of painters, he was the disciple of his father Antonio and his uncle Bartolomeo Vivarini. In his work we can also see the influence of Antonello da Messina and Giovanni Bellini. His first dated work is from 1475, the polyptych The Virgin, the Child and Saints, which is still in the Franciscan convent of Montefiorentino. He painted numerous works with religious subject matter for various churches.
