Born in Osnabrück, he studied architecture and sculpture in Hannover. Practically all his artistic activity was centred on abstraction, creating or joining numerous groups that were working in this field: after meeting Van Doesburg, he became a member of De Stijl, founded in 1927 the Abstract Art Group of Hannover, as well as the Cercle et Carré of Paris and in 1931 Abstraction-Création in the same city. In 1938 he was forced to leave Germany and take refuge in Holland.
