Born in Cowell, Massachussets, he spent his childhood in Russia, where his father worked as an engineer. On his return to the United States, he entered West Point Academy, which he soon left as he could not stand the military discipline. He went to Paris to study painting and entered the Gleyre Academy, meeting Courbet and painting according to the principle of Realism. He moved to London, where he would develop his career until his death, evolving towards a less compromised and more aestheticist art.
