Born in Nüremberg, he was an outstanding painter and engraver who trained initially with his father, the painter Valentin Wolgemut. He is supposed to have travelled to Flanders because of the influence of artists such as Bouts and Van der Weyden that can be appreciated in his work. After a visit to Munich he settled again in Nüremberg, whose workshop Dürer entered as an apprentice and where he was able to have his first contact with the technique of printing.
