The master Bertram was a a painter and sculptor who worked in the area of Hamburg and had an active studio which produced many commissions, especially important being the Grabow Altarpiece which he painted between 1379 and 1383. We must situate Master Bertram at the beginning of Germanic painting, he being the key figure of the so-called *Primitives*, and his work, of great plastic force, having an enormous influence later.
