This still-life was painted in Amsterdam in 1937, when Beckmann had to go into exile from Germany to escape from the hounding of the Nazis. In it we could expect to find the exasperation characteristic of the difficult time that the artist was going through; however, the work seems here to be used as a balm and the painter takes pleasure in showing us a world of pleasure and beauty through the fruit and flowers. Only the elevated point of view and the vivacity of the technique used allow the tension of the painter to show through.
