Biography HOMER, Winslow
Biography
Homer spent the last period of his life in an isolated house on the coast of Maine, an area of winds and storms. His subject matter then centred on the depicting of an unleashed nature against which man fights tenaciously. The technique is freed with loose brushwork to magnify these great compositions; in this case the brave saving of a dismasted ship, almost disappeared amid the waves. The cold range of colours helps to intensify the dramatism of the moment.
