Although this work makes us think of French Realism, more specifically of Corot and the school of Barbizón, Homer did not have direct knowledge of this kind of painting and would only visit Europe years later. From the precision, characteristic of the illustrator, of his first period, the painter has evolved towards a looser technique and a greater capacity for overall vision. The light, which is filtered between the trees, is an essential element in this majestic vision of nature.
