This work forms part of a picture twice the size, whose other half in in the Gallery of Modern Art in Munich. It is a fourfold portrait of his wife Hilde: seated and looking intellectual, dressed to go out and with a look of amazement, and -in the other picture- with a look of self-assurance and smiling. In these four interpretations of one and the same personage experts have seen a representation of the four temperaments.
