Kupka understood his painting as a process of research into pure forms, giving rise to the creation of abstract art. He experimented with colours and with the interplay of vertical lines, for him "the central axis of all constructions". In this work the forms suggest to us the pipes of a great organ or the coloured stained-glass windows of a cathedral.
