Le Lissitzky was the creator of the concept of Proun, a word derived from the expression Proekt Utverzhdeniya Novogo (Project for the Affirmation of what is New); this very name already indicates the painter eagerness in his search. In them he starts from the Suprematism of Malevich, who had evolved from Cubism to lead plastic arts towards the most absolute abstraction, ruled by the rigour of the geometric purity of forms. The straight line dominates creating a direction for our eyes, the brushstroke has disappeared and breaks the immobility with a dynamic tridimensional treatment. In fact, Proun is situated in the transition from Suprematism to Constructivism; by proposing a tridimensional language, the painter is breaking the limits between painting, sculpture and architecture. Lissitzky himself said that proun "is the transfer between painting and architecture".
